De burgemeester kan camera’s op straat plaatsen als dat nodig is voor de veiligheid. Deze camera's staan vooral in de binnenstad. Maar ze kunnen ook op andere plekken in de stad worden neergezet als dat nodig is voor de veiligheid.

Er zijn twee soorten camera’s. Vaste camera's worden telkens voor vier jaar geplaatst. Dan worden ze geëvalueerd. Deze camera’s worden lang neergezet in gebieden met de meeste drukte en de meeste incidenten.

De gemeente heeft ook flexibele camera’s die voor korte periodes van een paar dagen tot maximaal zes maanden worden neergezet.

Dankzij live cameratoezicht kunnen beginnende incidenten snel worden gezien. Dan kan de politie of een handhaver naar het incident worden gestuurd. De beelden mogen door de politie ook worden gebruikt voor opsporing. Er gaat ook een preventieve werking uit van cameratoezicht en veel inwoners, bezoekers en ondernemers voelen zich veiliger door de camera’s. Gemeentelijke observanten houden bijna 24 uur per dag live toezicht op deze camera’s. De beelden worden 28 dagen bewaard en daarna verwijderd. Behalve als beelden nodig zijn voor opsporing: die worden langer bewaard door de politie. Alle camera's worden geplaatst op basis van aanwijsbesluiten die de burgemeester neemt.
